We Ride Australia is a national charity created from the Australian bicycle industry’s Cycling Promotion Fund established in 2000.
For close to 20 years we have told the stories of local successes through our national Cycling Luminaries Awards and we have worked with governments, individuals, bicycle and industry groups to help Australians choose cycling—to make cycling and active travel a more convenient, attractive and safe option.
We know however that of the roughly two-thirds of Australians not currently considering cycling for transport, more than half of those would if conditions were better and safer.
The decision to ride a bike for transport – a local, daily occurrence in itself – is profoundly dependent on urban form, behaviour on our roads, training and education and the quality of routes and paths available to cycle on.
We need to do it because bicycle riding uses minimal fossil fuels and is a pollution-free mode of transport. Bikes reduce the need to build, service and dispose of cars. Bicycle riding conserves roadway and residential space, thereby providing opportunities for less concrete and more plant life in urban areas
We Ride Australia engages nationally so that locally we can make a difference.
We work closely at various times with many organisations and groups, both through our events and campaigns, and behind the scenes in policy discussions and meetings.
